The much-anticipated Hong Kong Maritime Week adopted themes such as green shipping, maritime technology, decarbonisation, and green shipping, which are forward-looking and push for long-term bearing on the maritime industry.

The Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board has spearheaded the Hong Kong Maritime Week 2021, a major annual event of the maritime and port industries in Hong Kong, from October 31st to November 6th.

Industries have expressed support of HKMW 2021 and have been anticipating the return of the event after its cancellation in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The HKMW 2021 was a fabulous week of multifarious maritime activities covering themes of shipping and maritime, ship finance, maritime law and arbitration, marine insurance, ship management, maritime technology and digitalisation, green shipping and decarbonisation, port and logistics and maritime education, and career.

The HKMW featured over 30 activities such as forums and seminars, competitions and visits, etc. Industry players and members of the public were welcomed to join the momentous events. A series of seminars and workshops on marine insurance and ship finance were organised during the HKMW 2021 to explore the development of high-value-added services in Hong Kong and exchange market intelligence with industry professionals.

This year, the Hong Kong Maritime Week has added a new industry concerning the theme of the environmental shipping industry and carbon reduction. In recent years, the global maritime industry has been working to promote green shipping, which refers to the utilisation of resources and energy to transport people and goods by ship and targets cutback in such resources and energy to preserve the global environment from GHGs and environmental pollutants produced by ships.

The Hong Kong Maritime Week was co-organised by the Hong Kong Shipowners Association and the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, and its partners Hong Kong Trade Development Council and InvestHK.

HKMW has since been recognised as a crucial annual event. The promotion of the industry internally, nationally, regionally, and globally was a vital aspect and recommendation of the study. The promotional effort has been expanded by regular visits overseas and to the Mainland by members of the Board to promote Hong Kong and boost mutual cooperation.

The Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board (HKMPB) was set up in April 2016 to provide a high-level platform for the industry and the Government to work closely together to set the direction for the development of Hong Kong’s maritime and port services.

The Board joins hands with the industry to assist the Government in devising maritime and port-related strategies and initiatives, creating a friendly environment to facilitate maritime and port business, promote manpower development and groom industry talents, and supporting and promoting Hong Kong’s maritime services.

There are three functional committees led by industry figures under the HKMPB: the Maritime and Port Development Committee, the Promotion and External Relations Committee, and the Manpower Development Committee. A fully-fledged Secretariat is housed in the HKSAR Government to support the work of the HKMPB.
