Rube Foster, a passionate sports lover, is popularly described as the Father of Negro League Baseball and the brain behind modern-day American Baseball. The efforts of the African American have been recognized severally and recently attracted the attention of the United States Mint through the 2022 Negro Leagues Baseball Commemorative Coin Program.
American Baseball continues to increase in popularity, with the fun and excitement of the sport transcending international borders, with millions of fans in different parts of the world. However, the story of American Baseball will be incomplete without a mention of Rube Foster, who is also the founder of the Negro Leagues. Rube Foster is attributed to have created the business of baseball as it is seen in the present day. Over the years, the feats achieved by Rube Foster, especially in the world of baseball, have been referenced on multiple fronts and he is again set to be recognized with the creation of the 2022 Negro Leagues Baseball Commemorative Coin Program by the US mint.
The Negro Leagues Baseball commemorative coin program was created to celebrate the rich history of African-American baseball and the impact of the sport on the social advancement of America. It also aims to assist the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in the promotion of tolerance, diversity, and inclusion through sport.
The 2022 Negro Leagues Baseball Commemorative Coin Program will feature designs on a $5 gold coin, a $1 silver coin, and a half dollar clad coin, as authorized by Public Law 116-209. The designs include Rube Foster, founder of Negro National League, the gesture of tipping one’s cap, a pitcher mid-throw, groups of players, Negro League tour buses, and other league-themed images. All designs were created by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designers and sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artists.
The Negro leagues were created in 1920 as United States professional baseball leagues that comprised teams of African Americans as well as a relatively low percentage of Latin Americans. The term is often used broadly to include professional black teams outside the leagues and sometimes narrowly for the seven relatively successful leagues.
