Dustless Duct Finds 27% of Inspected Air Duct Systems Don't Need Cleaning
ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Oct. 23, 2026 – Dustless Duct reports that 27% of air duct inspections conducted across its Maryland and Virginia markets and Washington, D.C., resulted in no cleaning recommendation. The findings come from an internal review of digital camera inspections performed between January and September 2026.

The results reflect a recurring experience for the company. Homeowners schedule appointments expecting their air ducts to need cleaning. Yet an inspection sometimes reveals the system is in acceptable condition and doesn’t need cleaning.

“We get calls from people who are convinced their ducts need cleaning because it’s been several years since their last appointment,” said Joseph, an air duct cleaning technician at Dustless Duct. “Then we put the camera inside, and everything looks fine. They’re usually surprised when we say there’s nothing they need to pay us for.”

The company’s review found that 73% of inspections identified conditions that warranted professional cleaning. In the remaining 27%, technicians found no clear need for the service based on their assessment of accessible ductwork.

Dustless Duct says a common misconception among homeowners is that air ducts need cleaning every few years, regardless of their condition. Promotional discounts and routine maintenance reminders can encourage people to schedule appointments even when there are no visible signs of a problem.

According to the company, the time since the last cleaning offers little indication of the actual condition inside a duct system.

The review found that 71% of customers who received a no-cleaning recommendation had last cleaned their ducts more than three years earlier. Dustless Duct says this finding shows why the date of the previous cleaning should not determine the need for another service.

The company uses digital camera inspections to examine accessible sections of ductwork and show customers what technicians find. The process can reveal substantial debris accumulation or signs of contamination that require further assessment. It can equally reveal ductwork in good condition.

A dusty air vent alone does not establish that the entire duct system needs cleaning. Unpleasant odors or concerns about indoor dust may require further investigation to identify their source.

Dustless Duct says camera inspections help make these conversations easier for homeowners. Customers can review what they see inside their ducts and understand why a technician makes a recommendation. If cleaning is unnecessary, the technician can explain the findings and advise the customer accordingly.

The company’s position is consistent with guidance published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA does not recommend routine residential air duct cleaning and advises homeowners to consider the service on an as-needed basis. Its guidance identifies conditions that may warrant cleaning, including substantial visible mold growth inside HVAC components or hard-surface ducts and pest infestation. Excessive dust or debris entering living spaces can also warrant a professional assessment.

Dustless Duct encourages homeowners to ask contractors what an inspection revealed and what evidence supports a cleaning recommendation. The company says customers should receive a clear explanation of their ductwork’s condition before approving the service.

After more than two decades in the industry, Dustless Duct says its inspection experience continues to reinforce the value of evaluating each system individually. The company maintains that recommendations should reflect documented conditions inside the ductwork rather than a predetermined cleaning schedule.

“Cleaning is what we do for a living, but every house doesn’t need it,” Joseph said. “Sometimes the best thing we can do for a customer is show them that their ducts are fine.”
