David Dumay, a professional basketball player with Sarasota, Florida’s Gulf Coast Lions, has earned recognition for his talents on the basketball court and his uplifting story of perseverance and triumph while climbing to the top.
Growing up, David’s journey to professional basketball often seemed out of reach, and his accomplishments today are the result of unwavering passion, dedication, and perseverance on and off the basketball court. As a child and teenager, David saw his mother work two or three jobs at times just to get by, and he then struggled with his own battles, including a life-threatening colon illness, which required seven blood transfusions to keep him alive, before also facing systemic bullying and unexpected death of his father on the week of his 18th birthday. Painful and challenging experiences that threatened to derail his dream of playing professional basketball, his resolve was tested, but his spirit did not waiver.
“Basketball is my passion, and growing up, it was my place of refuge as well,” remarked David Dumay. “Through hard work, dedication, and trusting the process, I overcame hardships that at times really tested my resolve and ability to play. It was a tough time for me, and I knew people already counted me out, but I was and am still determined to overcome the odds,” he added.
His journey to Sarasota, Florida’s Gulf Coast Lions, a minor league basketball team in The Basketball League (TBL), may have been unexpected for those who had counted him out. But David now finds himself on the Gulf Coast Lions’ practice squad as a combo guard while recovering from a meniscus strain. He has just finished training camp and has been doing charity events, like exhibition games, to support the local Sarasota community and children from backgrounds like his.
“I have been playing basketball since I was four years old, and it is a true honor to be a part of the Gulf Coast Lions,” remarked David Dumay. “As I heal from my meniscus strain and learn what it is like to be a professional athlete, I look forward to taking this opportunity to the next level with my supporters. I will trust the process as I have done at so many other points in my life,” he added.
