Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – The Saddle Up Harrisburg Team including Project Cultivate, Inc. led by the forward-thinking Dr. Robyn S. Joppy, Emily Selvey of the Prairie Fire Farms Foundation, and Wil Amy, PepsiCo, has announced plans for the return of Saddle Up Harrisburg Summer Day Camp 2025, which is scheduled to hold from June 23 to 27, 2025. The camp is in its fourth year.
When people look at those in the equestrian world, it is noticeable there are not many minorities competing, dressing, or training horses. Although inclusion into the sport is slowly changing, people of color are still not well-represented. According to the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), “Black riders make up less than 1 percent of the USEF, and a Black equestrian has never competed for the U.S. in the Olympics.” However, the Saddle Up Harrisburg team continues to make a difference.
The purpose for initiating the camp is to give minority and inner-city children an “experience” of a lifetime which include learning about horses as well as riding. During this crucial point in our culture, representation matters. Additionally, campers will have the opportunity to both learn and be trained by phenomenal professionals/experts in the horse industry. The experts coming this summer includes a farrier, veterinarian, horse trainers, a horse masseuse, professional riders, and more.
Interest in enrolling children into the camp has been overwhelmingly positive. When registration opened, the camp filled up in two days. If you did not make it this year, please prepare to join us in 2026.
