Different grammages of cupstock correspond to different capacities and usage scenarios. The mainstream selections for commercial use are as follows:

• 150–180gsm: Mostly used for 6–9oz small cold drink cups, disposable water cups and sample tasting cups, suitable for light-use scenarios such as exhibitions, offices and supermarket tastings. Usually manufactured with single-sided PE coating.

PE-Coated Cupstock

Polyethylene (PE) coating is the mainstream and mature solution in the global paper cup industry, available in single-sided PE (for cold drink cups) and double-sided PE (for hot drink cups) variants. Its core advantages are prominent:

• Stable and reliable performance: The PE layer forms a dense waterproof, oil-proof and heat-resistant barrier, suitable for both hot beverages above 90℃ and cold/iced drinks. It prevents leakage and keeps the cup rigid even after prolonged liquid holding.

PLA-Coated Cupstock

Polylactic acid (PLA) coating is a bio-based biodegradable eco-friendly solution. Made from renewable plant resources such as corn starch or cassava, it can decompose under specific industrial composting conditions. It has the following objective limitations in application:

• Limited thermal stability:Its heat resistance threshold is lower than PE. When holding hot beverages above 65℃, the coating tends to soften and deform, with potential material migration risk, making it more suitable for room-temperature or cold beverage scenarios.
• Specific degradation requirements: It can only fully decompose in industrial composting facilities with temperatures above 58℃ and specific microbial flora. In natural environments or domestic landfills, its degradation rate is slow. With low coverage of industrial composting facilities in most regions worldwide, the actual environmental benefit depends on supporting waste treatment systems.
• Higher cost and process requirements: Raw material and processing costs are higher than PE-coated paper. Its compatibility with high-speed cup forming machines in terms of sealing and curling is inferior to PE, requiring more production debugging. In addition, it is sensitive to moisture and heat, with a shorter shelf life.

Water-Based Coated Cupstock

Water-based coating is a plastic-free solution that replaces plastic coatings with water-based polymer barriers, positioned for plastic reduction and easy recyclability. The technology is still in the development stage, with the following application limitations:

• Relatively weak barrier performance: Its waterproof, oil-proof and heat-resistant properties are overall weaker than PE coating. When holding hot beverages, oily or sugary drinks for a long time, the cup body tends to get soggy with potential sidewall leakage.
• Lack of unified standards and consistency: There is no unified global performance standard yet. Product quality varies greatly among manufacturers, with inconsistent print adhesion and forming stability, making mass production consistency difficult to guarantee.
• Recycling infrastructure to be improved: The more complex production process leads to a higher end price than traditional PE-coated paper. Furthermore, waste paper recycling systems in most regions have not yet formed a mature sorting and processing flow for this material, so its recycling advantage relies on system upgrades to materialize.
