PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating is a core surface treatment for decorative stainless steel, with coating thickness being a controllable parameter that directly determines service life—requiring a balance between performance, internal stress, and manufacturing cost. Understanding this relationship is critical for selecting suitable materials for different projects.PVD coatings are applied in a vacuum environment via sputtering or thermal evaporation, with thicknesses ranging from 0.3 to 5 microns, and the coating thickness directly affects both color durability and service life. For decorative stainless steel sheets, the standard PVD coating thickness for indoor decorative applications is 0.5-1.0μm, which can effectively ensure color uniformity and avoid color difference; for outdoor or high-corrosion environments, the coating thickness needs to be increased to 1.5-3.0μm to enhance corrosion resistance. According to industry standards and practical test data, PVD coatings with a thickness of 0.5-1.0μm can pass 1000 hours of neutral salt spray testing without discoloration, while coatings with a thickness of 1.5-3.0μm can withstand 2000 hours of neutral salt spray testing, with the color retention rate remaining above 90% and no obvious fading or peeling.

In addition to service life, the color durability of PVD-coated stainless steel sheets is closely related to coating thickness and environmental conditions, which can be accurately verified through salt spray testing—an important indicator to measure the stability of PVD coating colors. According to the neutral salt spray test (NSS, 5% NaCl solution, temperature 35±2℃, spray pressure 0.07-0.1MPa), the color durability of PVD-coated stainless steel sheets shows obvious differences with different coating thicknesses and base materials. For stainless steel sheets with a PVD coating thickness of 0.3-0.5μm (common for decorative purposes), the color retention rate can reach 95% or more after 1000 hours of neutral salt spray testing, with no obvious discoloration, fading, or peeling, and the color difference ΔE is controlled within 1.5 (meeting the ISO 105-A02 standard for color fastness). For sheets with a coating thickness of 1.0-1.5μm, the neutral salt spray resistance can be extended to 2000 hours, and the color retention rate still remains above 90% after the test, with no significant color change even in a high-humidity and salt-rich environment.

For 304/316 stainless steel sheets with PVD coating (TiN, ZrN), after 1200 hours of neutral salt spray testing, the surface color remains uniform, the coating does not peel off, and the color difference ΔE is less than 2.0; even in the acidic salt spray test (AASS, pH 3.1-3.3), the color retention rate can still reach 85% or more after 800 hours of testing, which is far higher than the industry average standard. This is because the PVD coating forms a dense protective film on the surface of the stainless steel, which can effectively isolate chloride ions in the salt spray from eroding the base material and prevent the coating from discoloring or peeling due to corrosion, thereby ensuring the long-term stability of the decorative color.

In practical applications, the service life of PVD coating color is also affected by the use environment. For example, in indoor dry environments (such as office decoration), the PVD coating with a thickness of 0.5-1.0μm can maintain the original color for 8-12 years without obvious fading; in outdoor environments with moderate corrosion (non-coastal areas), the color service life is 5-8 years; in harsh coastal environments with high salt spray concentration, choosing a PVD coating with a thickness of more than 1.5μm and adding anti-corrosion treatment can ensure that the color service life reaches 3-5 years, which is 2-3 times that of traditional electroplating colors. This data fully confirms that the PVD coating technology has excellent corrosion resistance and color stability, which can effectively ensure that the decorative effect of the stainless steel sheets remains unchanged for a long time.
